This is a story full of epic failure, but not on the bakery’s part; nope, on mine. There are two stores contained at the 17th Avenue location (1305 17th Ave. SW, to be exact) of the Rustic Sourdough Bakery: a deli and a baked goods storefront. The tragic half of this tale takes place in the former.

rustic-sourdough-bakeryI’m a fan of Subway. It’s fast, affordable, blah-3-blah-grams-blah-of fat. Given my fan-dom, I have a tendency to walk into delis offering custom sandwiches with a certain routine in mind. But I was happily stunned out of my Veggie Max stupor by the friendly European-accented service I received (that would be Epic Fail #1). And while their vegetarian selection is limited, I was very pleased at the wide selection of real cheese they offered, as well being offered a soup or salad combo (less carbs = happy blood sugar).

And anybody who will stick avocado next to your bacon has got to be in the good books, right? Mmm, avocado…

Anyway, the slowest part of getting my grilled, roasted veggies on rye and provolone that particular day was the debit machine, but we all know good food takes time to prepare. And indeed, it is good: my “sandwich artist” may not have asked if it was to stay or to go, but it turns out, it didn’t matter anyway. My stomach, so used to accomodating a full Veggie Max sub, only ate half the modest sandwich and a small Greek salad (Epic fail #2). Lo and behold, the other half was already happily wrapped in paper and plastic (#3 – trying to outwit someone who knows what they’re doing).

Another sign of good, wholesome food: you’re not starving half an hour later. But that may have been the cheesecake tart from next door…
