Nothing says wholesome fish and chip shop quite like heavy metal and an inordinate number of arm tattoos. And that’s exactly what you get when you step inside Chippy’s.
This particular haunt located on Queen West is mesmerizing. I pass by it every day after work and have to mentally assault myself to avoid going in and ordering a fat, crispy deep fried halibut and some vinegar-y chips.
There’s no seating in Chippy’s (save for a couple stools by the window) but no worries – Trinity Bellwood Park is located right across the street and there couldn’t be a better place to enjoy this gift from the sea (if it’s the winter time, cart that stuff home, yo). Plus, they serve your meal in sweet cardboard boxes – not quite the newspaper they use in Jolly Old England, but just as cool.
The most unique thing about Chippy’s has to be the service staff. Covered in tattoos, tight jeans and pumped chock full of attitude, the guys who fry your fish and ring up your order are a sight to behold. They won’t be going above and beyond their call of duty as fish fryer or cash handler, but they do give the whole place a nice Sid Vicious-type ambiance. It’s either them or the crazy punk rock blaring from the speakers.
Two pieces of halibut and fries will set you back about $12; rock and roll attitude at no extra charge. Alright thanks for reading this but I have to go get my Chippy’s fill right this instant. Mmmmmm…
